First Step In Branding A Product

June 11, 2007

I was thinking today about this blog and even though I haven’t been working on it for to long, I’ve come to a realization.  I originally started this blog as a sort of project in personal branding.  My aim as I work through school, rather than just coast through, finish my courses and find some dull desk job, is to apply the things I learn in school and out to a variety of projects that would “brand” me so to speak as a type of “product” in the employment marketplace.  I don’t mean to wax philosophical or anything, but as I look at the direction of this blog, it seems to be more an examination of the product and the overall business environment rather than the actual branding of the product.  So, to preserve the integrity of the “product”, I’m announcing a new direction for this project.  While I suppose it still, in the end, will form a part of my “personal brand”, this blog’s new aim is to explore the business environment and the interesting and innovative “goings-on” and “idea generation” happening within it.  It will stay more or less within the bounds of the Conceptual Age concept, so it will explore the slightly “different” or I suppose if you really want to be grand about it, the “revolutionary” in the business world.  Any attempt to brand a product will definitely be more successful if the product and the product’s environment are first well understood.

It helps to brand yourself and then establish a product. For instance, if you are perceived as being quality, it will translate into any product your selling being quality.

    An example is Donald Trump.

I understand what you’re saying. I may not have worded my posting in the best way. I think what I mean is that I feel that maybe I’d like to explore the overall business environment more before I commit to a “brand”. Or do you feel that a brand should be able to move fairly freely within the overall business environment? How would you go about making a personal brand malleable?

Well, we are already branded. It’s more about how we distinguish ourselves by our brand to promote our businesses.

In this instance, though, being online, how am I already branded? I would think that the only certain thing would be the environment or the “market”, so to speak. I would think over time that the product and brand would both require development from nothing. For example, I wouldn’t see this blog, being in its infancy as branding me as a certain type of product already. I would think it would require some time. Any thoughts?

it requires time to further a brand and develop it into a master brand. But we have no choice but to be branded in the first place because of others perception of us.

Understood. Okay then, let’s try something. We’ve never met personally. We’ve “known” each other for a very short time as internet personas. Describe in five words my personal brand from your initial impressions!
